on taking part in the planned activities of the day will need to be in
the dining area by 7 AM so that after breakfast they can board the boat
around 8 AM. (Those staying behind can utilize the alternative
activity list, and then join the group for lunch.) The boat will
travel about 20 minutes to San Lucas Toliman, where we will visit the
historic church, and stroll through the market place. If you are
of a mind, for usually less than $5.00 per pound you can buy very fine
coffee that is produced high in the mountains above San Lucas Toliman
and processed by the church to help the local farmers get a larger
portion of the profits from the hard work of producing coffee.
After a late morning snack, it will be all board small buses for a
leisurely trip along the upper rim of the east and north side of Lake
Atitlan. The caravan will stop at several points along the way
taking advantage of various “miradors” [scenic view spots]
from which one can see the whole of lake Atitlan from almost 2000 feet
above the surface of the lake. One can readily begin to
the grandeur of Lake Atitlan Region and the three volcanoes which
created the lake some 85,000 years ago.
There will be a catered late lunch /picnic at the mirador directly above San Antonio Palopo, followed by a drive through several small villages, including Panajachel where you can do some late afternoon shopping for souvenirs, all while on the way back to Hotel Nuestro Sueno for some sunset refreshments of your choice and light buffet dinner.
